Coaching Resistors of Change
Here’s a list of
seven strategies for helping other people understand, accept and
deal with change:
1. Anxiety equals resistance.
- When people don’t fully understand what’s happening they
become anxious and fearful. The higher the anxiety, the higher
the resistance.
2. It’s not the actual change, but the
uncertainty that it scary to employees.
- Computers are a good example of the type of change that
frightens employees. If a computer is seen as difficult to learn
and workers are afraid to approach the keyboard, their fears
make it difficult to learn even simple routines. Recognizing
that it’s fear of the unknown that is causing the difficulty may
help to ease the problem.
3. Involve those to be affected by the
change in the planning.
- Many of the questions about the effect of new policies or new
equipment can be answered before they are blown out of
proportion. Meet one-on-one and in teams to give everyone a
comfortable opportunity to voice their concerns and ask their
questions.
4. Feed the grapevine with accurate
information.
- Keeping change “secret” is seldom successful and is often the
cause of mistrust and defensiveness in employees.
5. Don’t be surprised at some
grumbling.
- Think of it as sounding off...listen, but don’t get caught up
on it.
6. Give plenty of feedback and
encouragement during transition periods.
- Employees will need lots of support as they establish new work
patterns.
7. Thank people after the change is
complete.
- Genuine appreciation for a job well done is an excellent
motivator

20. Good idea—but...
21. You’re two years ahead of your time.
22. We’re not ready for that.

32. We did all right without it.
33. That’s what we can expect from staff.
34. It’s never been tried before.
35. Let’s shelve it for the time being.
36. Let’s form a committee.
37. Has anyone else ever tried it?
38. I don’t see the connection.
39. It won’t work here.
40. Maybe that will work in your department, but not in
mine.

43. Let’s all sleep on it.
44. It can’t be done.
45. It’s too much trouble to change.
46. It won’t pay for itself.
